She is predeceased by her husband, Wes Dieter, and son-in-law, Sam Ortiz. She is survived by her sons David (Debra) and Charles (Cathy), and daughter, Dana Ortiz, as well as four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
As a child she lived at the New York State Ranger School in Wanakena, New York. Her family moved several more times, living in South Dakota and Nebraska. Barbara graduated from Lincoln High School in Nebraska, and attended the University of Nebraska for two years. She graduated with her Bachelor's degree at the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1948. While at CU she met her husband, Wes Dieter, and they married on May 29, 1948. She had a 23-year career teaching in District 11 in Colorado Springs, and during that time she acquired a Master's degree from Colorado College.
She was one of the co-founders of Curiosity Unlimited, a community outreach program at UCCS. Barbara and her husband were active members of Friendship Force, and enjoyed traveling to Europe with the group.
The family will be observing a private memorial service.
