Herb Harger was born in Evans City, Pennsylvania to George and Edna Harger. He loved music and played the piano and trumpet. After graduation, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the US Navy in July 1945. He was fortunate that WWII ended in September so he was never deployed. He then decided to pursue a career as a civil engineer and convinced the Dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh to accept him. He earned his degree in three years, graduating second in his class and with honors. In 1951, he and his wife (Jean) headed to California for a better life, weather and opportunities. They landed in Inglewood and he went to work at North American Aviation. They loved Inglewood but couldn’t afford a home there so they had to look elsewhere; finally choosing Manhattan Beach where a new home was only $10,000. He was often kidded that marrying Jean and moving to Manhattan Beach were two of the best decisions he ever made. After working for the State Bridge Department, he made a career move to Consolidate Rock Products (later to become ConRock) in 1957 as an engineer. After several promotions and industry awards, he retired as Executive Vice President in 1984 and never looked back. He was proud to say: “I was retired more years than I worked.” In retirement, he traveled with Jean to 43 countries and visited all 50 States. He was also an avid runner; a participant of the Old Hometown Fair 10K Run 36 times, including his last in 2021 at 94 years young - the race’s oldest finisher.
He is remembered by his contagious smile, kind heart and generosity; especially to those in need. His devotion to God and family were unparalleled.
Herb is preceded in death by his parents George and Edna Harger, his loving wife Jean of 61 years, sister Mary Scheidemantel and infant son Herbert Phillip. He is survived by his two sons Robert and James and their wives Shannon and Lauren, grandchildren Matt, Sean, Megan and Cameron.
A Rosary will be held at American Martyrs Church on Thursday, May 23 at 6 pm. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 24 at 10 am. A brunch reception will immediately follow mass in O’Donnell Hall. There will be a private burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.
