History of Marlatt Funeral Home & Cremation Centre
Marlatt Funeral Home was established in Grimsby around 1865 and operated by Ezekiel and his son James Charles Marlatt. James’ son James Bertram moved the business from Grimsby to Hamilton 1n 1919 and was associated with the firm of A.H. Dodsworth and became the Dodsworth, Marlatt & Brown Funeral Home. James Bertram left this firm and opened his own establishment at the current location, 615 Main Street East with the name J.B. Marlatt Funeral Home. James Bertram was only in business 2 months when he died suddenly. James Bertram’s son, James Donald Marlatt took over the business. In 1959 he purchased the Mitson Funeral Home in Dundas and operated it has the Mitson-Marlatt Funeral Home. James Donald passed away in 1973 and his son Scott Marlatt took over the operation of both funeral homes. In 1985 Scott sold both funeral homes to the Loewen Group of Burnaby B.C. The Loewen Group became the Alderwoods Group in 2002 and in 2006 the company became part of the Dignity Memorial Network
