Carole Bailey Newman (87) affectionately known as Carole, Mom, and Mawmaw passed away peacefully with her daughter by her side, on April 11, 2024, at home in Sugar Land, Texas. Born to Clarence and Minnie Bailey on August 20, 1936, she was a beacon of light and warmth in the communities she dearly loved.
Carole was a cherished member of the Bailey family, being the only child. In 1957, she married James “Jim” Newman in a beautiful ceremony at her family church, marking the beginning of a shared life filled with love and devotion. A graduate of Princeton High School and Marshall University, Carole dedicated her life to family businesses, Calvary Baptist Church, and her children.
Carole’s love extended to her two children, the late David Newman, Sandra (John) Coombs (Sugar Land, TX) and who remember her as a nurturing soul, always ready with a comforting word or an engaging story. Her two grandchildren, Aaron (Signe) Coombs (Americus, GA) and Ariel Coombs (Houston, TX) along with her two great granddaughters, Adley and Emery will carry her legacy of kindness and joy.
An avid gardener, master of crossword puzzles, and a keen bird watcher, Carole also graced many with her talent as she sang solos, taught Sunday School at the churches she attended in both Nitro, WV and Sugar Land, TX. Her famous homemade butter rolls, and lovingly knitted Christmas sweaters were the highlights of family gatherings. Her commitment to the West Virginia communities of Nitro and Charleston was evident through her volunteer work at local schools and her tireless efforts in organizing the first county and state Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) chapters in West Virginia. Carole also was a magistrate candidate through the Kanawha County Court System.
Predeceased by her parents, husband, and her precious son, David, Carole’s memory will be cherished and kept alive by her loving daughter, beloved grandchildren, treasured great grandchildren and communities that were better for her presence.
A celebration and service will be held at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens West Virginia Mausoleum, Cross Lanes with Lead Pastor Aaron Karr of Calvary Baptist Church presiding May 23, 2024. Burial will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
A very special thank you to her exceptional caregivers, Lou Ella Jewell and Susan Tabe who gave Carole love and support while she remained comfortably at her daughter and son in laws home.
