Shirley Coss, age 82, of Crystal Lake, Illinois passed away on Friday, May 17, 2024. She was born on March 13, 1942 to the late Arthur W. and Martha Nickels Sr.. She married her husband William "Bill" Coss on March 11, 1967.
Shirley was a Crystal Lake High School graduate. She continued her education at Moser Secretarial School in Chicago and worked as a secretary and accounts receivable at Ormsby Motors Inc. until her first son Troy was born in 1970. Five years later she welcomed her second boy, Adam. It was when Adam started school that she began helping in the classroom. This lead to a full time job with SEDOM "Special Education District of McHenry County", and she worked as a paraprofessional with children in EMH, BD, and Autism for 25 years. She was a devoted member of Bethany Lutheran Church. It was here where she met her dear husband, and where she also taught first and second grade Sunday School class for 64+ years.
A big part of Shirley's life was her family. She made sure to attend anything her children and grandchildren were involved in and give them all the experience of visiting Disney World to meet Mickey Mouse at least one time. She loved to travel. Shirley and Bill would go on at least one to two vacations a year, some short or some long, and had the opportunity to visit Florida, Myrtle Beach, Colorado, Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa, Tennessee, Ohio, Minnesota, Las Vegas, California, New York, Arizona, Wyoming, and even Canada.
Shirley is survived by her husband Bill; her sons Troy Coss and Adam (Camille) Coss; her grandchildren Kalie, Breanna, Justine, and Aidan; her great grandchildren Carter, Bentley, Mackenzie, and Jonah; her godchildren Brenda, Dawn, Jason, and Ashley; and her many nieces and nephews, especially Dana, Katy, and Wendy.
She is preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings Arthur Nickels Jr. and Sandra Nickels.
A visitation for Shirley will be held Wednesday, May 22, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Bethany Lutheran Church, 76 W. Crystal Lake Ave., Crystal Lake, IL 60014. A funeral service will occur Thursday, May 23, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Bethany Lutheran Church. A burial will take place at McHenry County Memorial Park, Woodstock, Illinois 60098.
