History of Patten Funeral Home
In 1949, licensed funeral director and embalmer James Patten purchased Louden Funeral Service after managing the business since 1937. Mr. Patten’s son, Fred, was discharged from the Canadian Forces in 1946 and joined his father in funeral service. They ran the business together until James Patten’s death in 1966.

Fred Patten purchased the Mason Wholesale site at 71 Union Street in the centre of town, which remains the convenient location of Patten Funeral Home. Harvey A. Cameron, an experienced local embalmer, was hired to manage the funeral home in 1979. When Fred Patten retired in 1987, he sold the business to Mr. Cameron and Eric Lynk, a United Church minister.

Rev. Lynk left the business in the late 1990s to devote his time to his ministry full-time. After Mr. Cameron’s death in 2009, Glace Bay native Vina Johnson assumed management of the funeral home. Today, we are a proud member of the Dignity Memorial® network of funeral, cremation and cemetery service providers, and we proudly continue the fine tradition of service excellence established by Patten Funeral Home in the 1930s.
