History of Thomson Funeral Home
In 1879, John Thomson set up the first undertaking establishment as an individual enterprise known as Thomson Funeral Chapel. The founding of this enterprise, now in its 130th year of service, is closely related to the development of the city as well as the province. In 1879 John Thomson opened up the first establishment on James Street, with horses as the mode of transportation for the deceased. Later, a move was made to 501 Main Street where Thomson built a building based on the needs of the public and hung a sign that read “Thomson Undertaking.” In 1900 a new Thomson Parlour was built across from City Hall where it became a part of the Thomson Block business establishment. By 1917 it was time to move again and the business relocated to its location today.
The brick exterior of the building portrays a functional design of that time period which appears simple and dignified. Our arrangement room is aimed towards a dignified and peaceful atmosphere which provides families with various options for cremation and burial plans. There were two chapel entrances, one large enough to seat 450, the other with a capacity of 160, with access from the sidewalk or your vehicle. Today, there is one large entrance into our spacious foyer and the one large chapel that contains oak beams, high ceilings and cathedral windows. A beautiful stained glass window in the chapel is a memorial to our founder, John Thomson. Following his passing in 1927, his son John F. and grandson Claude A. Thomson each became president, and Claude’s wife, Ividell, became president following her husband’s death. The firm was later purchased by long-time employees Gordon Cook, Del Millard, and Frank Smith, until it was purchased by the Loewen Group.
